Cristina, What is the story behind the photo?
Hi Emily,
Here you may find the background story http://www.dw.com/en/cologne-new-year-assault-reports-more-than-double-in-number/a-18969345
At least 380 women were assaulted on New Year’s Eve in Cologne for the simple fact of being women. Same type of assault took place in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Zurich, Finland and other cities. It took CNN 5 days to decide whether to cover this story or not. German main broadcasters took days before reporting it at the national level.
Thank you. There’s been moderate coverage here. The issue is being talked about over and over on some radio stations but there are no updates.
The number of complaints filed only in Cologne already exceeds 500 according to the Police… and counting…
We have to wait for the results of the investigation. So far it looks like an organized effort to disrupt social events and make the women fearful. If events like this happen again and in such diverse locations it could eventually discourage women from attending large sized open gatherings.
The police itself censored facts. That’s why the Chief of the Police had to resign. Most accounts of what happened were based on internal reports leaked by other police officers because of censorship. This was mass sexual assault including rapes and it’s the police who confirms it.
